Training in Librarianship in Mumbai University was started in 1943, when a Diploma in Librarianship was instituted by the University Library. In 1964, a full-fledged Department of Library Science was established and the Diploma Course was converted into the Degree Course (B.Lib.Sc.) with some changes in the syllabus. The Master's Course leading to the M.Lib.Sc. degree was introduced in 1968/69.
In 1995, the Ph.D. programme of the Department was revived and Dr. (Mrs.)Pratibha A. Gokhale received Ph.D. Degree in June 2001. She completed her research on the topic "Grey Literature :Generation, access and dissemination - a study". At present five research students are registered for Ph.D Degree in Library and Information Science.
SNDT Women’s University is the first Women’s university in India as well as in South-East Asia. The University was founded by Maharshi Dr. Dhondo Keshav Karve in 1916 for a noble cause of Women’s Education. The first five women graduated in 1921 from this University.
The University Headquarters is in Churchgate Campus, Mumbai and the other two campuses of this University are at Juhu, Mumbai and Karve Road, Pune.

Jamia Millia Islamia, an institution originally established at Aligarh in United Provinces, India in 1920 became a Central University by an act of the Indian Parliament in 1988. In Urdu language, Jamia means ‘University’, and Millia means ‘National’.

Library and Information Science Course: Dr. Zakir Husain Library has been offering and an academic programme leading to the Bachelor’s degree in Library and Information Science to meet the needs of the Library and Information Science profession. The degree programme in Library and Information Science is an intensive in nature, and thereby demands students who is highly motivated and dedicated to learning. Although classes are held and students are taught but one confined an emphases on self-instruction and participative learning.
