Brief History of Department
The Department of Studies in Library and Information Science, established on June 24, 1965 has steadily grown from strength to strength in respect of faculty and teaching programmes. Today, the Department is leading the country in LIS education and has made a strong presence in the profession through its innovative teaching programmes and sponsored Research Projects. The courses offered reflect the changing dimensions of the field. The curricula of our programmes reflect our commitment to change, innovate and adapt. Courses are geared towards imparting knowledge and skill sets requisite for the emerging information society and preparing the next generation of information professionals.

- Course Offered - M.Sc. in Library & Information Science
The Department of Library and Information Science, Andhra University had its origin in 1935 when the Senate sanctioned a summer school as well as a regular school of librarianship. Dr. M.O.Thomas, M.A., B.D., Ph.D., Dip. L.S. (London), F.L.A. organized these courses. According to him the courses were designed to suit the requirements to both the higher and the lower orders of librarianship and they led either to a Graduate University Diploma or a certificate of proficiency course was the first of its kind conducted in our country.
However, it appears the course had a checkered progress after 1938 when both Dr. M.O.Thomas and Sri. C.G.Viswanathan left the University, During Second World War the University was shifted to Guntur . The courses were revived in 1948, and C.L.Sc. and D.L.Sc. courses were conducted till 1958.
The Department of Library and Information Science has been offering two years integrated Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) and Ph.D. Programmes at the moment. The department is working with a vision to educate individuals for carrier as librarian, knowledge and information specialist and to undertake instruction, research and service programme that need current and emerging information and technology needs.
The Department is having advanced infrastructural facilities like Info Tech Lab with latest technology such as XEON Server, 10 PC's with 256 kbps leas line, Scanner, OHP, Laser Printer etc. The department focuses mainly on the advanced teaching and research. The curriculum of the course is very comprehensive and job oriented. The department involves the student in practical, seminars, conferences, debates.
The department used to arrange a study tour locally and nationally for the students to visit well established libraries and information centers to let them aware of the functioning and services of the same.
