Historical Background of the Department : Quite conscious of the growing requirements of its users, the Aligarh Muslim University built a modern multi-storied building of Maulana Azad Library that was inaugurated in 1960 by Late Pundit Jawaharlal Nehru, the then Prime Minister of India.
The library which once started with a small personal stock of few hundred books of Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, the founder of this great seat of learning and which came to be known as the Lytton Library of the M.A.O. College in 1877, has now grown into a mammoth collection of about 15 lac printed and E Books.
It is now regarded as the second biggest University Library of the Indian sub-continent. However, the foundation of the Department of Library Science was laid way back in 1950-51 with the introduction of a 'Certificate Course in Library Science,' by the then University Librarian, Late Prof. S. Bashiruddin.
Assam University came into existence through Assam (Central) University Act, 1989 . It was established in 1994,since then the University is steadily becoming an excellent centre of learning.
The University is situated in South Assam, bordering Bangladesh, Mizoram, Manipur, Maghalaya, and Nagaland. The Barak river flows across this region known as Barak valley.
The valley has a rich tradition of art, literature, culture and education. It has contributed a large number of eminent personalities to the nation in the fields of science, education, arts and many others. This historical heritage has given the place a strong foundation for the development of a Centre of Excellence in higher education.

The origin of Library and Information Science education in the University of Madras starts with the Summer School by Dr.S.R.Ranganathan, the then librarian of the University in the year 1929 under the auspices of Madras Library Association. This led to the introduction of Certificate Course in Library Science by the University in 1931. In 1937, the Certificate Course was converted into Diploma Course. Dr.S.R.Ranganathan donated a Lac of rupees in the year 1957 (University’s Centenary Year) for establishing a teaching Department in the University.
The Sarada Ranganathan Chair in Library Science in 1959, which was the first Professorship in Library Science in the British Commonwealth. Department of Library Science was established in 1960. And it has expanded as the Department of Library and Information Science in 1976. In 1989, two years integrated course in Library & Information Science was introduced. The nomenclature of the course changed from Master of Library & Information Science (MLIS) to M.Sc., (Library & Information Science) in 1993-94.

The Department was established as a full-fledged department of study and research in 1985. Though a one-year Bachelor of Library and Information Science (B.L.I.Sc.) course was being offered since 1977, in 1992 the Department launched a one-year Master of Library and Information Science (M.L.I.Sc) course. In lieu of these two programmes, the Department now offers a two-year Master of Library and Information Science (M.L.I.Sc.) course through Choice Based Credit Semester System (CCSS). It has also launched M.Phil and Ph.D programmes (part-time and full-time) in Library and Information Science. The Department is leading the country in Library and Information Science education and has made a strong presence in the profession through its innovative teaching programmes, curriculum innovations, research projects, workshops, seminars, and short-term training programmes. The courses are designed to be flexible and wide-ranging, incorporating the cutting edge as well as ensuring a firm grasp of core fundamentals.
